Corydon R. Dusenberry (“C.R.”) founded the company in 1924. C.R. and his wife, Catherine, built a store and lodge in White House Canyon (now Madera Canyon), located 35 miles south of Tucson, Arizona in the Santa Rita mountain range. Two times a week, he transported oak firewood from the canyon to a yard in Tucson, with return loads of groceries and blocks of ice (in the summer months) for residents in the canyon. Occasionally the trips included shipments of furniture for the vacation homes in the canyon. The first vehicle was a 1922 Dodge truck. In the mid1930’s the Dusenberry family moved to Tucson and C.R. obtained a Certificate of Convenience and Necessity from the Arizona Corporation Commission covering freight and household goods. The business was then known as City Transfer Company. A 1931 Chevrolet stake truck was purchased. With this truck, the dining room of the family home was converted to an office and the 2-car garage became a warehouse. The Dusenberrys were “officially” in the moving business. In 1939 City Transfer became an agent of what was then a small company known as United Van Lines. In 1947 United Van Lines organized into its innovative corporate structure with agent ownership. City Transfer changed its name to City Van & Storage Co. and became one of the stockholder agents of United Van Lines in the early 1950’s when a block of stock was purchased for $5,200. The company has remained a United agent ever since. United Van Lines eventually became the largest and most successful moving company in America. C.R. and Catherine had two children. Bruce E. Dusenberry and his sister, Martha Lois Dusenberry, purchased the company from their father, C. R., in 1952. Both Bruce E. and Lois were initially active in the business, with Bruce E. handling the operations and Lois managing the office and finances. Bruce E. remained active in the business but Lois did not, although she remained a Director and Shareholder of the Corporation until her death in 2004. Bruce E.’s son, Bruce L. Dusenberry, worked in the business throughout high school and in the summers during his college years, working initially in the warehouses and ultimately as a household goods interstate driver. He graduated from Occidental College in Los Angeles with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1972, and obtained a Law Degree from the UCLA School of Law in 1975. He practiced business, real property and estate planning law in Tucson for 17 years before retiring from the legal profession to take over management of the moving business on December 1, 1993.
Bruce E. was responsible for considerable business growth in the 42 years that he served as President of the company. He served on the Board of Directors of United Van Lines for 12 years from 1975 to 1987. Under his guidance, the company became one of the top agents in the United Van Lines system, with combined revenues of over $10 million in 1994. In that year the company name was changed from City Van & Storage Co., Inc. to Horizon Moving Systems, Inc. By 2005, under the leadership of Bruce L., all of the affiliated Horizon companies had combined revenues of $27 million. Like his father before him, Bruce L. served on the Board of Directors of UniGroup, Inc. (the parent company of United Van Lines and Mayflower Transit) from 2001 to 2009. Doing business under multiple corporate and business entities, the family of Horizon Moving Systems companies conducted operations throughout the entire state of Arizona with locations in Tucson, Phoenix, Sierra Vista, Yuma and Flagstaff. Looking back, the business first expanded in 1965 with the acquisition of a moving company in Sierra Vista, Arizona. Sierra Vista is the site of the Fort Huachuca Army post and the business was primarily focused on the military household goods segment. The Sierra Vista operation served all of southeastern Arizona with 35,000 sq. ft. of warehouse space and a scale. In 1970 a branch was opened in Phoenix, Arizona. Leonard Boyles initially managed the Phoenix operation. Under Len’s leadership (from 1970 to 1995), the Phoenix location grew to be Horizon’s largest revenue producer, while possessing the most diverse business mix. In addition to household goods operations, Phoenix has significant commercial, office, industrial, logistics and distribution business activities. The Phoenix operation was located adjacent to Sky Harbor International Airport with 50,000 sq. ft. of warehouse space and a scale. In 1975 Horizon added offices in Yuma and Flagstaff, Arizona. The Yuma branch was opened by Bill Brandon, who remained its General Manager for nearly 30 years. In 1996, Bruce L. formed Vista Moving & Storage, L.L.C. and purchased the Bekins moving and storage agency in Yuma. Horizon United and Vista Mayflower continue to operate in the Yuma market as part of the UniGroup family of commonly owned agencies. This market is the site of the Yuma Marine Corps Air Station and the U.S. Army Proving Grounds, which generate considerable military business. After leasing warehouse buildings in Flagstaff for over 20 years, the operation was relocated into a brand-new 20,000 sq. ft. warehouse building, constructed by the Dusenberry family and opened in December 1996. Flagstaff served the Park Service, the U.S. Army, the U.S. Forest Service, the Indian Health Service and other government related enterprises including Northern Arizona University. It also served many smaller communities spread throughout northern Arizona, a geographic area about the size of the state of Pennsylvania. In 1996, Bruce L. formed Vista Moving & Storage, L.L.C. and purchased the Bekins moving and storage agency in Yuma, Arizona. He partnered with Bill Brandon, the former General Manager of Horizon Yuma, to acquire and operate this business. After the first year of operation, the van line affiliation was changed to Mayflower Transit and Vista Mayflower continues to operate in the Yuma market as part of the Mayflower Van Lines family of commonly owned agencies. Tucson remained the corporate headquarters for the affiliated Horizon companies and operated as the original United Van Lines agency. In 1989 several warehouse locations, some owned and some leased, were consolidated into a single 55,000-sq. ft. warehouse, office and maintenance shop facility at 3600 E. 36th Street. It was designed and constructed by Bruce E. on a 7 acre parcel, where a 45,000 sq. ft. document storage facility was also constructed.
